English (and Welsh) Birth, Marriage and Death certificates can be obtained, if available, for any date between about July 1837 and approximately two years ago.
The Births and Deaths Registration Act and the Marriage Act of 1836 was passed by the British Government for the provision of recording the births, marriages and deaths of individuals in England (and Wales). From then on registration has always been compulsory, but failure to do so did not result in a penalty until 1874, hence a large number of early births went unregistered.

For Scotland the statutory registers comprise the official records of births, marriages and deaths in Scotland from 1 January 1855 when civil registration replaced the old system of registration by parishes of the Established Church (Church of Scotland). From 1855, registration became compulsory, regardless of religious denomination, and followed a standard format for each record type. Birth records less than 100 years old, marriage records less than 75 years old and death records less than 50 years old are deemed to be modern day records and for these records it is necessary to order a certified extract.

New Zealand certificates are generally available from 1848 to now. However they are not indexed on-line, so finding the correct reference is generally more difficult than the UK ones.
